Battery Storage

A battery storage power station is a type of energy storage power station that uses a group of batteries to store electrical energy. Battery storage is the fastest responding source of power on grids, and it is used to stabilise grids and provide energy to a home or business in the absence of energy genration from the renewable sources. Battery storage can transition from standby to full power within milliseconds to deal with the Power Requirements.

At full rated power, battery storage power stations are generally designed to output for up to a few hours. Battery storage can be used for a few hours of short-term peak power and also for ancillary services, such as providing operating reserve and frequency control to minimize the chance of power outages. They are often installed at, or close to, other power stations and may share the same grid connection to reduce costs. Since battery storage plants require no deliveries of fuel, and have no chimneys, nor do they have large cooling systems, they are compact compared with generating stations and so may be located within urban areas close to customer load.

Presently, the power and capacity of the largest battery storage power plants is of very low magnitude as compared to that of the largest pumped storage power plants, the most common form of grid energy storage. However the field is expanding at a rapid pace.
